Alzheimer's Disease.
Alzheimer's is a disease commonly found in the elderly but what exactly is it?
Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease affecting the brain and it is a type of dementia. As the severity of the disease increases, vital organs and tissues begin to be affected by the decreasing functionality of the brain. Alzheimer’s is known as a progressive disease; the longer you have it for, the more you are affected by it. Of all the elderly people affected with Dementia, it is approximated that 60% are specifically affected with Alzheimer’s. Symptoms of Alzheimer’s include memory loss, adversities in thinking and just difficulties in carrying out fairly easy tasks.
Brain lesions are abnormal protein fragments that have been identified as the causes of Alzheimer’s. The two types of fragments amyloid plaques and tangles multiply, accumulate and cause the death of surrounding brain cells. These two fragments first develop in the part of the brain called the ‘Hippocampus’ and the death of brain cells in this region of the brain results in a declining ability to cope with everyday life as well as the recollection of very recent information. As these fragments spread around to other parts of the brain, more bodily functions are negated.
There are currently no ways of completely curing Alzheimer’s however effective medicines are available. Some of these medicines can aid in slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s however most of these do result in unwanted side affects. It is also strongly recommended by health experts that the treatment of any type of dementia should include close care and support.
The risk of acquiring Alzheimer’s increases with aging and it is most common in people over 65 years of age. According to the NHS, 1 in 6 people over 80 years of age acquire this type of dementia. The onset of Alzheimer’s disease can be delayed by many ways and simple practices. These include

Maintaining a high level of physical and mental fitness
