Hypertrichosis - The Werewolf Syndrome

Hypertrichosis is classified into two main groups: Congenital Generalized Hypertrichosis (CGH) and Aquired Hypertrichosis. More commonly known as The Werewolf Syndrome,it is in most cases a very rare genetic disorder which results in extreme hair growth on the body, most extensively on the facial and upper body regions.

There are records from the year 1344 showing evidence of distinctive human beings with a substantial amount of hair growing on their body. Normal human hair, wherever on the body it grows, is kertanized epithelium made of mulitple layers of flat-cells overlaid with keratin. Hair typically grows at around 15 centimetres a year on most people, but it induvidual hair growth rates do vary according to hormone levels, genetics and environmental factors.

The extensive growth of hair in most situations is caused by the mutuation oh the 8q chromosome or just by spontaneous genetic mutation. Further research into this genetic order is yet to be done however it is not too much of a priority as only a tiny fraction of the human population are affected by it.

There are no cures for this disease in this point in time however there are several methods of managing this condition.
